Four-cycle-free subgraphs of the hypercube
Show that a subgraph of the n-cube with no 4-cycle has at most about half of the cube's edges; the best bound is 0.60318.
Four-cycle-free subgraphs of the hypercube
The -dimensional hypercube is full of 4-cycles: every pair of coordinate directions spans many squares. How many of its edges can one keep while destroying all of them? Taking about half of the edges is easy; Erdős conjectured that one cannot do substantially better, and offered $100 for a proof.
Problem
Let be the hypercube graph on , in which two vertices are adjacent when they differ in exactly one coordinate; it has vertices and edges. Let be the largest number of edges of a subgraph of that contains no cycle of length 4. Is it true that
Background
Erdős raised the question around 1990 and wrote that determining exactly is "perhaps not hopeless". It is a Turán-type problem inside a fixed host graph, and the same question can be asked for longer even cycles. The best upper bounds come from Razborov's flag-algebra method adapted to the hypercube, while the lower bounds come from explicit constructions, so both directions are open to computer-assisted work.
What is known
- Lower bounds. Erdős showed for a constant , and Brass, Harborth and Nienborg (1995) improved this to .
- Upper bounds. Thomason and Wagner (2009) proved , slightly improving an earlier bound of Chung. Razborov's flag-algebra method, adapted to the hypercube, then gave (Balogh, Hu, Lidický and Liu; preprint 2011, published 2014) and (Baber, 2012), still the best bound.
- Small cubes. Since every edge of lies in exactly of its subcubes of dimension , averaging gives , so is non-increasing and exact values in small dimensions bound the limit. Harborth and Nienborg found ; Minamoto (2026) constructed -free subgraphs with edges in and edges in , so . Explicit edge lists for dimensions to have been posted on the problem's forum.
What would count as progress
- A proof that for some , for example a flag-algebra certificate with exact rational entries that can be checked independently.
- A construction showing for a fixed and all large , which would disprove the conjecture.
- The exact value of , now pinned to , or of , with certificates of optimality.
- A formal proof against the Lean statement in formal-conjectures.
