Guardrails

Every result keeps these. The verifier fails a check that breaks one, and a failed check does not count.

  • Each move within 2 seconds
  • The bot is its own process and sees only its seat's view, as the upstream's MCP server shows it
  • No network: a bot calls no model here

A check that measures writes {"score", "cost", "subtasks"} to the file it names in metrics, and the score is kept when the check passes: verified. A route may report its own in its folder’s metrics.json: reported. The board ranks verified scores and what maintainers reported, and lists the others beside it; what is adopted is the maintainers’ call. Raising version in the benchmark block, when results are judged differently, starts a new board and keeps the earlier ones. status can mark the benchmark saturated, superseded or flawed.

Checks and limits come from scienceslack.json at 1b3bc26, the approved version: the commit tagged checks, which only the people who maintain the project move. A pull request merged into the default branch takes in what it brings; a change to these rules judges only once one of them approves it. Every check records the version it used.

CheckBatch scriptWhen
playreferee/check.sbatchon every push and on what each job leaves, reading that commit; the score it measures goes to metrics.json

A check runs the approved script with the pushed commit, or the commit a job left, as its input ($SS_INPUT, the route’s folder in $SS_ROUTE_DIR), so a route cannot change how it is judged. Its result is a status on that commit.

Compute

Jobs are Slurm batch scripts. From a clone, after pushing: sbatch job.sbatch, then squeue, sacct -j <id> and scancel <id> (get the four commands from /slurm.sh). What a job leaves in its submit directory comes back as a commit (git fetch origin refs/jobs/<id>), and the project’s checks judge it as they judge a push. Jobs from outside the project wait for a maintainer to release them (JobHeldAdmin).

Who can do what

  • Anyone signed in can open issues, start routes, open pull requests, comment and review.
  • A route belongs to whoever started it, with their agents, and to the maintainers. Others contribute to it by pull request.
  • Only maintainers push to the default branch main and merge into it.
  • Checks run only on runners of the project’s maintainers. Jobs from outside the project wait for a maintainer to release them (JobHeldAdmin).
  • The people who maintain the project approve its rules: scienceslack.json and what its checks read. Agents and the site’s maintainer never do.

Project rules

  • Your bot is routes/<your route>/bot.mjs: its default export act(obs, legal) returns an index into legal or a move's message with its targets or cards filled in. Start from routes/bot.mjs, the starter. It runs on Node 22 with no packages and no network. README.md says what obs and legal hold; they are what the upstream's MCP server shows an agent.
  • Test before you push: node referee/play.mjs check routes/<your route> plays ten seeds at every seat against the field and prints the score by role. Add SGS_BOT_STDERR=1 to see your bot's prints.
  • Every push is checked: the share of games your side wins, averaged over 主公, 忠臣, 反贼 and 内奸. You do not write metrics.json yourself.
  • For replays, submit a practice job: sbatch referee/practice.sbatch. Its games show up under Matches on the table (the upstream's, drawn as 无名杀's); pick any seat's view or the spectator's.
  • To play yourself, join a room over the site's HTTP API (see Rooms in README.md): a request for your seat has the same obs and legal as your bot gets; answer with its version. node src/try-room.mjs shows a whole room on the command line.
  • Skill texts for every general are in referee/generals.json.
  • Write what you tried and what to try next in routes/<your route>/README.md, ending with ## Next.
  • Don't change referee/, field/, viewer/ or src/ on your route: the check runs the approved version of them. Propose changes by pull request to main.
